A roof budget with the scope included
This calculator answers a limited budget question: what does the architectural asphalt example show for a supported roof size? It keeps the roof-area basis, slope and exclusions visible instead of presenting a universal roofing price.
The range covers measured roof surfaces from 1,500 to 3,000 sq. ft. with one existing layer, normal access, moderate complexity and usable decking. Other systems and scopes need a separate assessment.
- Use the example
- The starting 2,000 sq. ft. is measured roof surface.
- Read the scope
- One layer, normal access, moderate complexity and usable decking.
Calculate an asphalt roof planning budget
The 2,000 sq. ft. starting example uses known roof surface. Change it only if you already know a different area, or leave the example in place to understand the budget.
Keep the 2,000 sq. ft. example, or enter an area you already know. Roof footprint means the area covered, not total living space.
Keep the 6:12 example unless you already know the pitch. Pitch helps check material suitability.
Planning budget example
Planning example for 2,000 sq. ft. of actual roof surface, using architectural asphalt shingles. Ordinary tear-off is included.
Assumes one existing layer, normal access, moderate complexity and usable decking. Metal, low-slope systems and repairs need a separate scope.
Discuss your roof projectArchitectural asphalt planning only. Additional layers, damaged decking, structural work, permit fees, difficult access and optional upgrades need a separate allowance.

Planning assumptions and exclusions
This Oklahoma/OKC-area model was checked October 27, 2026. It uses an illustrative architectural asphalt scenario for 1,500 to 3,000 sq. ft. of measured roof surface, one existing layer, normal access, moderate complexity and usable decking. Rates are planning inputs rather than Newcastle quotes.
Known roof surface is the sloped area being covered. A footprint is converted using the entered pitch; the converted surface must still fall between 1,500 and 3,000 sq. ft. The 2,000 sq. ft. starting example is measured roof surface.
Ordinary one-layer tear-off is included. Extra layers, damaged decking, structural work, permit fees, difficult access and material upgrades are outside the model. No repair, metal, commercial or low-slope price is calculated.
Roof size, slope and the planning range
The tool keeps different measurements separate so a living-area figure does not quietly become a roof measurement.
Known roof surface
This is the sloped area to be covered. The supported model covers 1,500 to 3,000 sq. ft. of that surface. A 3,000 sq. ft. surface remains valid; a larger or smaller surface needs a separate scope.
Roof footprint
A known footprint describes the area below the roof. The entered pitch converts it to an illustrative surface area. The converted result still has to stay within the supported range. This is not a conversion from total home living area.
Asphalt-suitable slope
The pitch is retained even for a known surface because material suitability still matters. The tool does not price asphalt shingles below 2:12; low-slope systems need their own material and installation basis.
What changes the final roof price
The arithmetic does not decide the roof scope. It illustrates one type of replacement under named assumptions.
Concealed and related work
Damaged decking, extra existing layers, structural work and changes to gutters or fascia need separate allowances. Permit fees and optional upgrades are also outside this scenario.
Access and complexity
The base assumes normal access and moderate roof complexity. Steep areas, many roof interruptions and difficult staging change the work even at the same measured area.
